Aboriginal Events in June and August

Earlier this week we recognized National Aboriginal Day, and for those looking for further opportunities to get involved with events related to Aboriginal Voice and Action, we are happy to tell you about the following.

First up is APTN’s Aboriginal Day Live, which will take place this Saturday, June 25th, at the Forks in Winnipeg. The Manitoba Teachers’ Society will have a presence from 11 AM to 5:00 PM at the event, promoting Orange Shirt Day at the MTS tent (#24) and our Bear and Beaver language board in the Kids’ Zone. You can look for the MTS logo on #ADL2016 signage on site and on http://www.aboriginaldaylive.ca. If you have never been to this incredibly family friendly event, it is the place to be on June 25th — it is THAT good. Remember to stop by the MTS tent for your free MTS “Every Child Matters/Orange Shirt Day” Frisbee!

In August, there are two events related to Aboriginal education. The first is a retreat called, “Walking the Truth: A Land-Based Retreat” which is being presented by the Aboriginal Circle of Educators and takes place from August 14-19 at Windy Hills, Hillside Beach, Manitoba. It is described as a land-based Retreat for front line personnel, from community workers to educators. The focus of the Retreat is to learn how to better live True. Using teachings and traditional forms of knowledge sharing, Myra will offer participants the opportunity to learn naturally and to use their knowledge to walk truthfully. During the same time period, the second August event takes place on August 17 & 18. The Treaty Education Initiative (TEC) Summer Institute will be held at the Lower Fort Garry Historical Site. More information will be made available soon at http://www.trcm.ca/treaty-education-initiative/tei-training-registration/, but we can tell you that the theme will be, “The Treaties, the Treaty Relationship and Reconciliation,” and is targeted towards School Administrators, First Nation Education Directors, Divisional Consultants, Speciality Teachers, and Team Leaders.
